ABOUT US

From our base in County Laois, we work on projects throughout Ireland, north and south. Our staff have over 20 years experience as professional archaeologists.

Most of our clients have, or intend to, apply for planning permission, to a local planning authority or An Bord Pleanála.

Depending on the nature of the proposed development, the local planning authority can instruct planning applicants to hire a consultant archaeologist.

The local planning authority can instruct the planning applicant to commission specific archaeological measures prior to issuing a final planning decision regarding the proposed development.

The archaeological measures can include:

  • An Archaeological Impact Assessment Report. This report looks at the history and archaeology of the area of the proposed development, and analyses the proposed development, and its impact on the known archaeology and history. This report is also known as a Desk Based Archaeological Assessment.

  • Pre-construction Archaeological Test Trenching. This measure involves using a mechanical excavator to excavate test trenches within the footprint of the proposed development, and is used to establish if any archaeology is situated under the existing soil/ground. This measure takes place prior to the development commencing. It requires a Licence from the National Monuments Service.

  • Construction Stage Archaeological Monitoring. This measure involves an archaeologist being present on site during the topsoil stripping / ground disturbance works associated with the proposed development. This measure requires a Licence from the National Monuments Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

It has been our experience that the earlier we become involved in a project, the less likely our clients are to experience problems and delays with their project.
